Top dog-friendly Cafes in Auckland Central

Love dogs AND coffee? Given we are a definite ‘YES’ to both, we know our way around our local Auckland cafes that are located nearby dog-friendly walks and parks.

To start the year off on the right paw, below are our top picks of where you can satisfy your caffeine cravings in the company of four-legged friends. Comment at the bottom of the page if you have any other go-to’s for you and your pooch!

Rosie + Parnell Rose Gardens (outdoor location): Roses are red, violets are blue… for a more relaxed morning or afternoon, set yourself up at Rosie in Parnell. They’ve got a flavour-filled menu, great smoothies and stylish interiors to enjoy before heading across the road to ‘smell the roses’ (literally). Our cocker spaniel, Ralph (@ralph_the_spanner), enjoyed watching the gold fish swimming in the fish pond while we were there.

Takapuna Beach Cafe and Store + Takapuna Beach: Water bowls, dog leash tie-up station and plenty of outdoor seating for you and your pupper are found at this location, plus always excellent food (a.k.a. gelato). The best thing about heading to the beach in the more wintery months is that the dogs can jump and play in the sand, without a muddy mess to deal with at the end! Win/win.

Ampersand & Eatery + Orakei Basin (walk): If you don’t already know, the recent development at Orakei Bay Village is probably one of the most dog-friendly centres around. Here, you can grab a coffee from one of the many cafes then take your dog for a loop around the basin across the road, which is an approximate 40 minute walk. Alternatively, smash out your cardio first and idle on into Ampersand & Eatery for a relaxed meal on the veranda that overlooks the harbour.

Kohi Cafe + Kohi Bar + Kohi Store + Kohimarama Beach: Similar to the above, but different, because it is along the shores of Kohi beach! Always a winning location on a sunny day, with plenty of excellent options to eat and drink. Most often we take-away from the store and picnic on the beach that is at your footstep, while the dog goes for a swim (queue that beautiful wet-dog car smell) or plays with other furry friends.

Odette’s Eatery + Victoria Park: With a fantastic outdoor seating area, you’ll often find furry BFFs at our fave, Odette’s. This is a great cafe-come-restaurant to enjoy a shot of caffeine and bite to eat at, after throwing a ball around Victoria Park down the road. Always delicious food, good service and they cater well to large groups.

Winona Forever + Tamaki Drive (walk): Start your morning along the waterfront looking out onto Rangitoto and end up at Winona Forever, where you will most definitely love everything you order, and there’s a spot for your dog too (note: not particularly sunny so pack a sweatshirt to sit outside).

Remuera Local Café + Waiata Reserve (Off Leash Dog Park): Take your pooch for a free-spirited, off-leash run around the park and once you’re done, it’s just a short walk up the road to the Remuera Local Café. We like the outdoor seating, French-inspired food and of course, a water bowl for your friend.

Domain on Ayr + Bloodworth Park (sports fields and walking track): Pick up a muffin from Domain on Ayr before letting your best friend loose for some fetch at off-leash exercise area, Bloodworth Park, at the bottom of Ayr Street. This cafe does a great selection of ‘healthy’ treats (think raw, vegan, gluten free etc.), salads and delicious smoothies, as well as an infmaous 20 minute fluffy pancake and ‘bubble and squeak’. Outdoor seating to boot, it’s a little winner.

Do you have a significant other that you like to brunch/coffee with? (talking about a dog, clearly). Comment below if you’ve got a great, dog-friendly spot we haven’t mentioned!
