L’affare Melrose

Tucked inconspicuously behind the main block of New Market shops, in what has become a bit of a cafe hub just off Khyber Pass, you’ll find this spacious spot where there is a passion for coffee and tasty food.  L’affare Melrose is part of the Caffe L’affare brand, which is a classic kiwi coffee company established in Wellington in 1990.

The New Market location opened relatively recently and has drummed up a good following, helped largely by the relaxed vibe and the fact that the fit-out has been finished expertly. Inside you’ll find high ceilings with exposed dark beams and timber, which are the foundation for the cavernous space. Emerald green leather seating and gold accents throughout the room elevate and refine the otherwise industrial style.

Menu wise, the options run all day, which is always a bonus on weekends for when you’re a bit slow off the mark.  There are plenty of brunch staples, such as the Benedict with house-made English muffin and your choice of prosciutto or salmon; and your ever-popular avocado toast, with lime, chilli and pistachio.  We’d suggest trying their corn-bread french toast, which is a stacked masterpiece of bacon, caramelised banana and maple cream, smothered in oozy maple syrup.

When we visited a short while ago, we found it easy to get a table for four of us and that the service was attentive and very friendly.  The coffee was great, and Claudia also really enjoyed their zesty and refreshing vegan smoothie, made with raspberry, pineapple, banana, orange and mint.

Overall, we’d recommend a visit if you’re after something a bit laid back, are with a group or just want a sit-down with a decent coffee, meal and the weekend newspaper!
