Another day, another cafe…but this one is unique. I can honestly say I’ve visited Caffetteria Allpress many times and the service and coffee is always excellent.
I became fond of this cafe when I was working nearby, for a good four months, at the end of last year. The sun-drenched balcony overlooking Drake Street was my favourite place to park up mid-morning for a dose of our illustrious NZ Herald and a long black. I also had a penchant for breakfasting on their eggs and soldiers if I made it into work early – there is something comforting about eating the same types of food you ate when you were five years old.
It’s not the place to go if you feel like an elaborate meal, but the simplicity is exactly what I like. Their white-on-black menu overlooks the counter and consists of a variety of individual items that you can piece together into a ‘designer’ breakfast or lunch. There are, however, pre-made options, such as their ever-popular Italian-style sandwiches and salads. The berry protein smoothie or green smoothie is a must-try – vibrant and flavoursome; you will almost always see someone sipping one of these at a table nearby.
Also, and rather obviously, this is one of the best places to go if you’re a fan of Allpress coffee. You can buy their beans for brewing at home, as a roastery sits above the cafe.
Who will you find here? It’s always a varied crowd, from post-fitness goers fuelling up after a visit to Victoria Park or Les Mills, to groups hosting work meetings, artsy types tapping away on their Macbooks and to those just grabbing coffee and keeping up with what’s worth ‘ranting’ and ‘raving’ about in the paper.
Highly recommend a visit!
p.s. it is home to the best cinnamon brioches
