Orphan’s Kitchen

Bringing “unadulterated” food to your early mornings, Orphan’s Kitchen, the distinctive Ponsonby restaurant, is now lending its deft hand to brunch. A lot of thought has gone into creating an original menu with classics tarted up by interesting ingredients, which makes it a place worth adding to your breakfast and lunch repertoire.

The standout features of the laid back, restaurant space are the pastel striped walls complimented by fluffy sheepskin-covered stools and rustic wooden tables. A striking staircase climbs the centre of the room and leads to a private dining area.

It was difficult to choose exactly what we wanted, so we started with their moreish homemade crumpets with burnt butter and roof honey ($8) (the honey literally comes from their rooftop, where they keep their own busy beehive). Laura then had the smashed avocado, goats chev, mint and chilli on rye ($16) which was light and flavoursome. Claudia went for the mushrooms, smoked quark, chive, truffle and a stick of brioche on the side ($20), which she found rich, but a welcome change to your typical, creamy mushroom dish. My choice was a tangy arrangement of bacon, feijoa, vine tomatoes and avocado on spelt ($19). Claudia also ordered a hot Valrhona chocolate with roasted hazelnut milk – a heavenly flavour combination!

The service was attentive and friendly without being overbearing, and our meals were out quickly.

We just missed hearing the DJs that show up from 10am every Sunday to serenade your morning meal, but figure we’ll have to visit again for the experience – and to snack away on more crumpets. Ideal.

We highly recommend a visit!
