Joining the multitude of quality cafes in the Herne Bay and Ponsonby area, Dear Jervois is the new kid on the block that is so far holding its own.
Thought has gone into making the somewhat unusually shaped café a stylish space. We like the design of the entrance, where industrial metal shelves peppered with green plants, sit behind a stunning wooden counter and cabinet; glossy black tiles are juxtaposed with exposed brick and plaster walls, and old-fashioned wooden seats are painted in pastels.
The menu caters to all tastes and requirements. The drinks list is comprehensive and includes a variety of coffees, super-food smoothies (think peanut butter and blueberry, yum) and fresh pressed juices. All the essential breakfast items such as Eggs Benedict, omelette, mushrooms and bagels (the Best Ugly kind) are available, as well as the crispy waffles made famous by their sister café, Little King in Milford. They’ve also got lunch covered, with sandwiches and burgers, as well as salads and vegan-friendly, dairy and gluten-free options.
For our Saturday morning brunch, we ordered coffees and pressed juice, and for our mains, creamy mushrooms with shaved parmesan on ciabatta, alongside the vegan tofu croquette. The service was not super speedy, but the presentation of the dishes was polished and both were wonderfully flavoursome.
For those after morning tea or something sweet, the freshly baked lemon or ginger loaves, scones and fluffy white chocolate muffins would certainly hit the spot. Additionally, the healthier option of a raw cake or tart is also possible, with The Raw Kitchen being their supplier.
Certainly a café with a bustling and lively atmosphere – worth a visit!
